“No business like square business” is more than a slogan, it’s a way of life for the prolific songwriter/artist, Square Biz. “I never wanted to be a commercial/performing artist, but I did want to find way to monetize my musical skillset. Sync licensing made that dream a reality.”
Raised in the heart of the Dirty South, Atlanta, Georgia, Square biz began writing poetry as a child following in his father’s footsteps. While in college, he started freestyling and quickly gained a reputation amongst his peers. This led to his first opportunity to do a feature verse on a local artist’s demo—This lit a fire that would burn slowly but never go out.
Square Biz’s musical influences range from Smokey Robinson, Prince to Tupac & Biggie, TI, Eminem, Lil Wayne all the way to Max Martin. Then in 2007, he heard the song “Free” by Zac Brown Band. The simplicity of the song structure made something click & crystalize mentally, and he knew he could write any type of song—not just hip-hop. After studying song structure and songwriting books, he created a “system” for writing quality songs. In 2018, he learned about sync licensing and focused all his attention on monetizing his skillset making music for film/television specializing in the hip-hop, R&B, pop, country and gospel genres.
Square Biz shared his vision with his musical friends, and when he was connected with the dynamic artist/songwriter/producer/engineer Joe Bleez out of Atlanta, he never looked back. Since then, Square Biz has been leading a national team of creatives from Atlanta, Los Angeles, Dallas, Philadelphia, Cleveland, Jacksonville and Newark, NJ. Square Biz inspires those around him by saying, “I am living proof that you don’t have to be the most talented, you just have to be the most committed.” The sky is the limit for this Square Biz and his team. While he will continue to be a formidable force in sync licensing, Square Biz’s ultimate goal is to write for commercial artist, chart on Billboard, and eventually win a Grammy. “If I don’t win a Grammy one day, I will certainly die trying.
